A New Look: The Dragon King of the Sea

A masterpiece in the Japanese art collection, the DMA’s renowned Dragon King of the Sea is a tour de force of bronze casting and recognized as the most significant Meiji period bronze sculpture in America. For many years, the work was only attributed to the Sanseisha Company, and the attending warrior was identified as Takenouchi no Sukune. Dr. Jacqueline Chao, the DMA's Cecil and Ida Green Curator of Asian Art, will share updated research regarding the many individual artists involved in its creation, and the true identity of the attending warrior and the nature of his meeting with the Dragon King.

Dr. Jacqueline Chao is The Cecil and Ida Green Curator of Asian Art at the Dallas Museum of Art. Prior to her DMA appointment, she served as Senior Curator of Asian Art at the Crow Museum of Asian Art of The University of Texas at Dallas since 2016, where she curated and organized more than 20 exhibitions that presented works from across the globe ranging from the historical to the contemporary in all medias. A specialist in East Asian and Buddhist art, she is a widely published author and frequent lecturer on Asian art. She holds an MA and PhD in the History and Theory of Art from Arizona State University, and an Honors BA in Art History from the University of Toronto. In 2019 she was recognized for her curatorial work in Patron magazine’s “Best Of: Curators” issue for bringing advanced perspectives to the Crow Museum’s collections and for broadening perceptions of Asian art. She is also the recipient of a 2021 Association of Art Museum Curators Curatorial Award for Excellence.
